Basque company Biotech Foods, launched in 2017 with funding from well known investors including Bill Gates, Sergey Brin (founder of Google) and Richard Branson, intends to debut its first cell-based meat products next year through its brand name Ethica Meat.

CEO Mercedes Vila says, “We have reached a point where intensive livestock farming is not enough, since there is mass production and a series of negative impacts have been generated, such as swine fever or ‘mad cow’ disease, among others,” explains Vila.

The company describes itself as “one of the few in the world dedicated to driving a revolution in the global food market, cultured meat”. Along with plantbased producers Foods For Tomorrow, which recently obtained funding from the Spanish government, Spanish food companies are beginning to leave behind their traditional animal-based roots and move towards more sustainable thinking.

“Society is aware of the need to move towards new food models. Spain is ready for change and we are confident that the integration of ‘Ethica Meat’ into the market from 2021 will only be the beginning”.
