If its creators can think of a less unappetising name, “clean meat” promises to be wildly popular. It purports to be a clear-conscience pleasure: by cultivating animal cells in laboratories, its manufacturers say they can produce food that is just as delicious as the real thing without the need to feed, breed and slaughter animals.

The “yuck factor” – the squeamish reasons cited against what is derisively referred to as “Frankenmeat” – is probably surmountable. We rarely think of abattoirs when we’re tucking into a Sunday roast. Why should we dwell on cell cultivation in a lab?
